Same Scam, New Mutation
The Game Show Host scam has mutated:
I received an email this morning:
“Dear Chris,
I hope you’re doing well. My name is Joseph, and I came across your contact information on your website. After listening to your voice sample, I wanted to reach out regarding an exciting new project. I’d love to consider you for a voice-over role. If you’re available and interested, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!
Best regards”
It didn’t seem legit because it was so vague, but I thought let’s not dismiss it out of hand.
“Hi Joseph,
What can you tell me about this project?
Thanks!
Chris”
The reply:
“Thanks for your response. It is a $850 voice-over assignment for you in English. A new corporate client of mine needs assistance creating their online website. This assignment entails a copyrighted script, and we'll have specialists and Contract Studio Engineers ensuring absolute perfection in the project. It's a two-day commitment, with each day requiring no more than 45 minutes of recording.
Job Location:
The recording will take place at a rented studio near your location, eliminating the need for extensive travel. Rest assured, I'll provide you with the studio's name and address before the recording date.
Job Description:
We're producing a marketing video for distribution across web and social media. The entire video spans about 20 minutes, with the game show host segment comprising approximately 8 minutes. The voice must exude a smooth, friendly, fun, and entertaining tone.
Sample Script: (Providing an idea of what to expect) (VO) Uh, I'm no rocket scientist, but I'd say... traffic congestion. (VO) Well, I'm no rocket scientist, but that's a no-brainer. Mass Transit is the better option.
Expectations:
Your mental and emotional readiness are crucial. If you're interested, please get in touch with me promptly. Further details will be shared once you confirm your availability. I greatly appreciate your swift response. Let me know if you're onboard to proceed with the necessary arrangements. I kindly request you to check your account email regularly for potential updates. Thank you.
Best regards
Joseph”
Knowing this is the classic game show host scam where I’ll be “overpaid” with a bad check after I’ve sent the overpayment elsewhere, I replied:
“Joseph,
Which studio will this be? I have to make sure they can accommodate my BS Detector, a special medical device prescribed by my physician. Often, I find that they can't, so I make the recording in my home studio. Most engineers are okay with my equipment setup. The Garfaques 350LE mic is a rarity, but it makes my voice sing with perfection.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Chris”
I don’t expect to hear back….
